Not many people can say that they hold a school record at West Forsyth. That is an exception for Aydin Davis, who broke a school record last year in the 400-meter sprint. Naturally, this causes a large amount of pressure for anyone to continue to perform up to that standard. But Davis does not let this bother him.
“I’m focused on continuously setting personal records in those same events and hopefully breaking the school records of the 100-meter and the 200-meter,” junior Aydin Davis said.
Davis started his track and field journey fairly late, but he saw the opportunity and decided to take it and run with it. He proved right away that he was a force to be reckoned with on the track.
“I started track in seventh grade. We were just coming out of Covid, and I really wanted to try a new sport and being in middle school, a lot more options were available to me with sports. Being that I’ve always been a faster kid while playing soccer, I thought track would be a good fit. I had never run track up to that point and I have always seen it and it always looked fun,” Davis said.
Once he got his start on the track, Davis realized it was something that he enjoyed and wanted to continue. He enjoyed it because it was an individual sport and he did not have to rely on others to determine his performance.
“You do not have to depend on a team to score a goal or to defend; it is about you and how fast you can get to the finish line. It is also fun because again, I was a faster kid growing up so it just felt normal,” Davis said.
Davis is also a multi-sport athlete. He plays on the varsity soccer team in the fall before moving over to track. There are some very large and obvious differences between the sports but also some unlikely similarities.
“I think some things are applicable to all sports, but the mental aspect especially. Yes, soccer is more of a shared team aspect. It is still important. Track is not always the individual squirrel all the time, you have things like relays so it is not always just the individual sport,” Davis said.
Whether it is soccer or track and field, Davis continues to give it his all, no matter the pressure or the situation. Davis has made an incredible impact on West Forsyth, which is why his name will forever be ingrained in the record books.
