The gym falls silent as senior Anna Hege winds up for a serve. The ball glides over the net untouched. This is how volleyball matches have been at West for the past three years with Hege on their team. Being one of the captains, Hege leads the team to their victories.
Though she’s been playing on varsity since sophomore year, Hege started playing volleyball much younger than that. Knowing she loved the sport then, she loves it more than ever now.
“I started playing volleyball when I was ten years old. I started playing at the YMCA and my first coach, Patrick Shugart got me into volleyball,” Hege said.
Hege’s first coach has a special place in her heart. Winning the regional and conference championships, Hege could not have played as well as she did without this team. It helped her improve and their teamwork was the reason for their victories.
“My teammates are the best part of playing this year. It’s my favorite team ever and I love it so much,” Hege said.
She loves the connection she has with her teammates, however it takes work to get that connection. Hege puts her all into volleyball and makes sure her teammates are on the same page.

“The most difficult part is learning how to play as a team and really connecting with your teammates. If one person doesn’t connect, it makes the whole thing fall apart,” Hege said.
Playing other sports in the past, Hege doesn’t regret sticking with volleyball in the least. No other sport compares to it and her admiration for it is irreplaceable.
“I used to play soccer, do gymnastics and horseback ride. I stuck with volleyball and I play indoor and beach [volleyball]. I really like soccer and horseback riding, but I love volleyball so much more. It just seems like so much more of a family sport,” Hege said.
Her hard work pays off, being a leader to younger players and helping the team in every way she can. Hege’s love for the sport and her teammates is what makes her such an outstanding player. As the season comes to an end, she will continue to work hard for her accomplishments.
