For the girls’ golf team, finishing second is par for the course. Coming off of a successful season last year, the team has earned another playoff berth this year, finishing second in the conference.
They had five first-place finishes and seven second-place finishes as well as winning a one-on-one match vs. Bishop McGuinness with an overall team score of 124-150.
The season wasn’t always smooth sailing. When senior co-captain Emery Bowlin was sidelined early in the season after breaking her foot, sophomore Una Davis stepped into the lineup, replacing Bowlin as the fifth seed, and helped keep the team afloat throughout the rest of the season.
Head coach Debra Troxell expects to take four girls to the state: senior co-captain Sadie Mecham, senior co-captain Katherine Perdue, freshman Kristina Tullos and freshman Sophia Perdue. Troxell was very satisfied with her team’s performance this season.
“We’ve done really well. We’re second in the conference but Reagan’s a powerhouse. Mecham is playing some great golf and Sophia Perdue has had several games right on par for 9 holes. Katherine Perdue has had some of her best games this year and I’m really proud of her. Tullos has been playing some great golf; she’s had her personal best golf game with one over par,” Troxell said.
The players are also happy with how they performed this season. They have won a number of conference meets and contended for first place in a majority of them.
“I think the team has performed pretty well. I think we’ve competed well against Reagan and won a couple of times, and I’d say it’s been pretty good,” Katherine Perdue said.
The golf team has had a very successful season and has overcome unforeseen problems and grown stronger from them. The team hopes to ride their success from the season into the postseason.
