“Progress over perfection” is the motto girls varsity basketball head coach Catrina Green has used to motivate her team through an objectively tough season. Before the season started the team’s top scorer, sophomore Jeanna Baskerville, tore her ACL and was out for the season. Without her, the team had to step up and adapt their playing style.
“As a whole, we had to approach this season with more intentionality and improve our defense from the beginning,” Green said.
First year player, senior Hallie Kramer, has filled in a lot of these gaps the team had at the beginning of the season. She has stood out as a top defender and has the second most charges taken in the conference.
“Kramer has added another level of toughness, and has been a game changer in many games for us,” Green said.
As the team transitioned into the postseason, the team as a whole has many things to be proud of. They finished with a regular season record of 12-9 and a conference record of 8-7, including three big wins against conference rivals Reagan High School. They went into the tournament as fourth in the conference.
“The coaching staff and I have a lot to be proud of this year. The team has made a lot of progress and we are a completely different team from where we started,” Green said.
Mindset and energy are big parts of stepping on the court. Every player has their own set of challenges that they have to overcome and grow from.
“My biggest challenge this season was breaking out of my comfort zone with this new team and continuing to work on my skills,” Kramer said.
The girls came into the first round of the conference tournament ready to play with a 44-29 win against Reagan and advanced to the next round to play Tabor.
“The Reagan game was the best basketball I have seen us play all season, we were ready to play and we did what we needed to do,” senior Braeden Carter said.
The team ultimately lost 60-40 to Tabor in the semi-finals, falling just short of making the state playoffs.
