Although the schools in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system have a psychology course to learn more about the brain and mental health, sometimes this isn’t enough. This made students in those classes form the psychology club. The psychology club is a great resource for students who not only want to learn about the brain, but specifically human behavior when it comes to mental health, disorders, and everything in between. This club is not only fun, but it’s also helpful for students taking the AP course. Psychology Club teaches through videos, academic games, and snacks! It also goes over the basics of psychology, so there is no need to stress about knowing the material ahead of time, making the club educational and stress-free.
“I love being able to talk about the mind with my friends. So when we go there, it’s a learning environment that promotes communication, and things of the sort”, freshman Kristian Camp said.
Even though this club is educational, that doesn’t mean that students don’t have the opportunity to enjoy their time and make friends along the way.
“I enjoy learning about how humans behave and different parenting styles, such as authoritative and permissive parents,” junior Kinza Ali said.
Not only will this club prepare you for the classes provided at West, but it can also help prepare you for any kind of future career paths, especially if you want to take psychology classes in college. The teacher sponsor for this club, Jamie Hester, encourages attending, especially since she has taught and taken classes on this topic for over 15 years. She chose this position so she could continue sharing her knowledge of psychology without teaching the course
“I started teaching psychology in 2009 and began AP Psych in 2011. I have read and graded the national exams. When I came to West, there were great psychology teachers in place. A couple of students asked me to sponsor the Psychology Club,” Hester said.
Along with Hester’s presence in the club, the president, senior Selena Sun, aims to provide a safe learning environment and learn about things that not only affects students, but will also help them in their daily lives.
“This would help build interest and help AP Psych students gain relationships and develop study groups. It is primarily led by former AP students. The current resident is Selena Sun. Each club meeting focuses on a topic in psychology. Psychology is fun and applicable to everyday life. Everyone has a story to tell that relates to it,” Hester said.
Regardless of whether you are an AP student or a freshman wanting to learn the basics, this club has something for everyone. This class will not only prepare you for today but also for the future, so join the psychology club before you regret it.
