With the first semester of school ending and the holiday season coming up, all performing arts at West are preparing for their mid-year concerts. Because of this, the Zephyr would like to feature a skilled singer and actress for her contribution at the school for the past four years: senior Camille Caldwell, otherwise known as Millie.
Ever since she was young, Caldwell always had a passion for the arts, particularly singing. This developed from her dad, who introduced her to musical media, an introduction that struck a match in the fire starter of her emerging talent.
“I’ve been singing since I was about four or five. It all started with Tyler Perry plays, actually. My dad introduced me to those and I was like ‘Hey dad, I want to do that,’ So my first show I actually did was Lion King, and I continued ever since. My dad has always been there to help me with my voice. He’s kind of like my vocal coach in that way,” Caldwell said.
In addition to these encouragements, her choir teacher, Jacob Cook, has been able to witness her talents shine. Her skills as a singer put her in a high position in her choir as she could even sing in different parts.
“[Caldwell’s position is] soprano one, but I mean, she’s incredibly talented. She could sing a new part, but mostly she sings the first soprano part, which is the highest soprano part,” Cook said.
Caldwell’s gift not only shines in singing. Besides chorus, she takes dance as another artistic class. Moreover, she has even worked in many positions for the theater department, which is under Margaret Hubbard, and even took on plays at Theater Alliance, a community led non-profit theater.
“She’s always played supporting or minor roles. She’s had leads at Theater Alliance in several shows. Her most notable, I would say, is the lead in ‘I am Angel,’” Hubbard said.
Regardless, Caldwell’s skills for theater are not only for on stage. She has helped them front stage and even backstage.
“She has acted in several of our plays. She was a PR Public Relations based on our board last year, and she helps backstage,” Hubbard said.
Caldwell not only participates in school theater and arts, but is also present in out-of-school activities, helping her community in musicals and plays.
“I used to sing for my church, but I do a lot of community theater and you’re singing a lot there,” Caldwell said.
Caldwell shows her dedication and talent when it comes to the arts, especially with her school choir, where she has performed at the fall concert, and soon at the Festival of Lights this December on the 13th.
