Two years down: All that’s happened in Trump’s presidency

Averie King, News Writer

President Donald Trump is one of the most polarizing figures in American politics ever. Between Fox News and MSNBC, the bias on both sides can make it hard to know the facts.

Trump started his presidency just as he promised he would, with an executive order intended to stop the Affordable Care Act from being implemented and releasing to the public a plan to crack down on immigration and trade. Trump also got the tax cuts he promised, and the economy has continued to climb throughout his presidency.

The Trump administration, while not loved by all, has had effect. The administration upheld the Obama-era red line against Syria’s use of chemical weapons and has begun a dialogue with North Korea. Trump also moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, something that four previous presidents promised to do, but never did.

Trump sits down in a meeting to discuss key issues with members of his administration. The Trump administration has made many controversial decisions.

The Trump administration has had their share of controversial policies. They cracked down on the prosecution of marijuana in states where marijuana is legal. While people in states where marijuana is legal have always been able to be prosecuted on a federal level, that was largely ignored under Obama. The administration also banned transgender people from serving in the military, but perhaps their most controversial policy was the immigration ban which banned people from countries that were perceived as a threat, mainly from countries that are majority muslim.

Not only has the Trump administration created their own controversies but so has an investigation by Robert Mueller. Mueller is investigating the possibility of Russian interference in the 2016 election, as well as the mishandling of campaign funds, that is in violation of campaign finance laws. The investigation has led to the indictments of dozens of people, including Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, Michael Flynn, the former Trump administration National Security Adviser and Michael Cohen Trump’s personal lawyer.

Trump has notably reigned in a new era of using the social media platform Twitter as a way of relaying his opinion to the public, an idea never before so often used by previous presidents. There is no doubt he has had a busy two years as president, with success, failure and controversy, the administration has pushed everyone to get involved in politics.
