This year marks the first in many that West Forsyth has its new Tri-Music Honor Society (TMHS). The club includes people from all types of musical backgrounds, whether that be in the chorus, band, or orchestra departments. The society is going to involve itself in all types of events, including performances and school cleanups. All students who are sophomores and higher just need a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and involvement with a music department to join.
“The purpose is to have a music-specific honor society that recognizes people’s musical achievements and also to be a place where they can demonstrate leadership through their service projects. And it’s really important because West does not have a music society or society specifically for high-achieving music students, and it will be a place to unite the three music departments in a way that will possibly benefit the community and the school,” Senior Kaylee Stuzman said.
Along with music performances and events, the community intends to take part in humanitarian actions like cleanups and fundraisers. They mean to take part in these events to improve the school’s look and bring more funding to both teachers and the music program in general.
“We will be doing some volunteering with local nonprofits, singing or performing music at nursing homes, helping with cleanup around campus, holding fundraisers or supply drives for the music departments, bake sales, and outings to music events in the area,” Stuzman said
Music students may also wonder why an honor society is only just now being started, but as it turns out, chorus teacher Jacob Cook has been trying to get the society restarted at West.
“I know that our advisor, Mr. Cook has tried to revive the club in the past few years (it was a chapter here 10+ years ago), but since then I feel like a club/society like this has been something that a lot of music students want, but haven’t actually acted out upon or taken the initiative to start.” senior Rebecca Hodousek said.
Music students who want to further their music education and be involved in a music-oriented community are encouraged to join TMHS.
“It seems like a really good scholarship opportunity and I think it’s a great thing to help your community,” said senior Connor Holmes.
The society had an interest meeting on August 20th but sign-ups and applications are still available until September 10th.
