The Titans field hockey team won their first game in two years against Mount Tabor on Monday. With the team gaining a new head and assistant coach, entering the new season. The team had struggled in years past with executing the offensive plays in the game. This season, with a new mindset and the help of their new head coach, they secured their first win.
“It was a good feeling to help our team win against Mount Tabor… because we all worked together to achieve that goal collectively,” junior Layla Gagou said. In years past, the team’s bond off the field was challenged, but this year the team worked together to drive the ball upfield and make accurate passes to one another.
“They [the team] stayed open and moved the ball up the field very well, along with our communication being good,” sophomore McKenna Gibby said. Gagou scored West’s first goal of the game in the third quarter, making the score 1-0. Scoring the second goal in the fourth quarter was Gibby.
Another critical point that led to them winning was the team’s communication throughout the game, which helped them to finish passes and be more encouraging towards one another on and off the field. The team is also gaining a new head coach and assistant coach, entering this season.
“I think we came into this game with a lot more confidence than we have in the past, but also knowing that working together, communicating, and hustle were really the keys to getting momentum. Secondly, putting the ball on goal when we were in the circle is really a top goal for us this year,” Head coach Megan Williams said.
A good start to any season is crucial to a team’s success, especially knowing West Forsyth’s record from past seasons and taking that into consideration. With this just being their first game, the Titans can only go up from here, starting their season off with a win, which can only encourage the team to go into the next game with more confidence.
