The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) is a society dedicated to recognizing Career and Technical Education (CTE) achievements throughout education. This is the first year West is adding a chapter of NTHS to our school and is starting to induct students. CTE classes focus on teaching learning skills that relate to careers for later in life, especially with hands-on learning assignments. It was founded in 1984 and has inducted over 65,000 students and awarded over $300,000 in scholarships nationwide annually.
Unfortunately, the society’s involvement at West had to be delayed until late in the second semester because its advisors wanted to ensure students had a chance to fully complete all levels of a CTE class.
“It’s just something that a number of teachers have thought about. This is a society that acknowledges a pathway in CTE, and it would be beneficial to do it. We got our chapter formed last year, but we had to wait until the semester was finished to make sure that we students completed the pathway, and we waited until the second semester to make sure that first-semester students who had missed it would be captured,” Marshall said.
To potentially get into NTHS, a student must fully complete all levels of a CTE-marked class and be committed to their classes.
“Students have to complete a path. For example, we have a pathway called teaching as a profession, and there are levels 1, 2, and 3, and after they complete all of that, they are considered to be a completer in CTE. They are eligible, and they have to have a GPA of 3.5 or above.” Marshall said.
