The Internet is a whimsical world of wonder and serves a variety of purposes and with technological advancements it has seen use in almost every person’s life. This of course brings several positives, such as granting people the ability to connect from great distances via social media, but it also brings certain negatives, like giving people the ability to commit crimes like piracy. Piracy is an illegal activity where people steal media, like movies or games, from a website.
A majority of the time, piracy is used solely and purely for entertainment. For example, with websites or apps, such as Delta, users can illegally download games and movies. Furthermore, a lot of people who commit piracy can actually afford the media they’re pirating.
Although it might seem like a minor issue at first, piracy has pretty big consequences. First all off, regardless of the situation, piracy is still a crime. Being caught in the act of piracy could lead to a fine of around $200,000 and jail time. Not only that, but even attempting to commit piracy could lead to unintended consequences such as accidentally contracting a computer virus. It might sound bad now, but computer viruses are only the tip of the iceberg.
Pirating anything off of an unknown website can be risky. It brings about the aforementioned computer viruses, but it could also unintentionally end up giving someone unsanctioned access to your devices. For example, an off-grid pirating website that makes you sign in to access it could also be delivering your email to the people who run said website, and with your email there’s no telling what these people could do. Several apps that serve to let people download illegal games have a twist to them, whether you know it or not. Sometimes, this twist might not be as noticeable as you might think, and to me, the dangers of piracy just aren’t worth it for a game that you might only play for a few months at best.
Despite all of this, piracy as a whole is something that is going to stick around, especially in this society where everything online is beginning to cost more. Even still, it’s important to remember that piracy is always a crime that’s not worth the risk, and whether or not you commit the crime one time or 100 times, piracy is an action that will have consequences.
