The theatre department felt creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky this year, so they chose to be all-together-ooky and put on The Addams Family musical this spring. Exploring the eerie family that it’s named after, The Addams Family musical explores the unexpected love story between the typically emotionless Wednesday Addams and a boy that gives her a change of heart.
The arts department discussed several different musicals, but in the end, Mr. Cook decided The Addams Family was a good pick for this year’s show.
“The arts team got together and talked about the pros and cons for several different musicals. Mr. Cook, being his tenured year, made the final decision of The Addams Family. I think he just felt like it fit this year’s group of peoples’ personalities and talents that really wanted to be in the production,” theatre director Margaret Hubbard said.
Hubbard and Cook are looking forward to watching the potential and talent of this group shine on stage. They believe that The Addams Family is a perfect opportunity for them to find themselves on the stage.
“I think this is a younger crew, not just younger in age, but just an experience level in theater. I also think that’s what makes it special and unique. I really think that this is the next generation in our departments coming into their own, and that’s been fun to watch through the whole process. There’s so much talent and potential in this group, and I think that’s what Mr. Cook and I are the most excited about- just their moment to shine and step up,” Hubbard said.
The cast is very excited about their characters and various scenes throughout the musical. Most of all, they are excited to put on a type of musical they have never done before.
“I am most excited for the scene called ‘Pulled’ that is with my little brother Pugsley. In this scene, I am quite literally pulling him on a stretcher and it’s the funniest thing ever, something definitely different than any other musical we have done,” senior Addison Nix (Wednesday Addams) said.
Other than wanting the ensemble to have more parts in the performance, the cast likes the storyline and feels like it’s a show with great family dynamics.
“I like it [the storyline]. I wish the ensemble had a little bit more to do, but the story itself is kind of endearing. I think it’s a cool family show; I know that our director, Mr. Cook, really likes Gomez’s arc, and it’s sort of emotional for him as a father and husband. So, I think that the show’s story is very nice for families and stuff,” senior Chadwick Holmes (Gomez Addams) said.
Due to weather and sickness, the musical had been set back a bit, but despite it, everyone is pushing through and doing their best in rehearsals.
“I feel like they [rehearsals] have been going well, but we have been getting a lot of notices that we need to focus more. We’ve been having a lot of moments where we need to calm ourselves down and get back into the groove because a lot of people have been sick and, due to the weather, missing some stuff, but I feel like everyone is really locking in and trying to do good,” sophomore Journey Atwater (Grandma Addams) said.
The opening night of The Addams Family will be on April 3 at 7 P.M. The next showing will be on April 4 at 7 P.M. There is no show on April 5 due to prom night, but the last show will be the matinee on April 6 at 3 P.M. There will be a $10 entry fee at the door which goes to support the drama department with their sets, costumes and other necessities for future productions.
