For over 20 years West has been hosting student talent shows where the student body can perform a variety of different acts. Both students and staff are both performing with new and riveting acts . This year, senior theater students Gray Dimock & Tanner Young will be hosting this year’s event.
“Now this year is different because we’re also infusing some faculty talent and just to make it fun we’re going to do a masked singer with it. Masked Singer is where you’re not going to be able to see the faculty members’ faces and you’ll be able to vote on your favorite one. As they get voted off they’ll reveal themselves,” Theater Director Renae Hubbard said.
Participants have to be 50% West students meaning if a group of 4 goes on stage then at least 2 half to be students of West and so on. Participants are chosen based on auditions which have a rubric as follows:
“It’s things like stage presence, appropriateness, entertainment value and of course the quality of the talent, like if it’s music, do they know what they’re doing. And it’s [graded]1-5, 5 being the highest. then we pick the top 15 acts from those scores,” Hubbard said.
The acts can range from singing or doing standup comedy to more abstract routines like a Kung Fu display or magic tricks. The talent show gives kids an outlet and the opportunity to express themselves on stage with whatever variety of talent they wanna show.
“The Talent show in general is always such a fun little thing. It’s such a variety of stuff, if you wanna see dancing you go to a dance recital, if you wanna see singing you go to a chorus concert but then there’s the other stuff like the people who play instruments. It’s just a lot of variety that I don’t think gets shown in a lot of other areas,” senior Dimock said.
