Students are raising concerns with deforestation within Clemmons and other issues such as climate change, and they’re figuring out ways to solve it. YPA (Young people Alliance) is a organization that helps the youth to learn how to take on leadership positions and sophomore Izabel Cana-Cajbon after joining this organization created West YPA that aims to better the community and the environment.YPA focuses on climate change and how the youth can help to fix the current conditions around them. This club is student driven and leads, organizes and plans most of their own events.
“I came to make a YPA club, I made it about climate because it has a lot to do with the youth since we are the ones that are going to have to deal with it and not the older generations,” sophmore Izabel Cana-Cajbon said.
YPA is an online program that contains a 4 week course that you take about leadership. Then you have something you’re passionate about, and you bring it to your school and make a club. So Izabel and Amina made a YPA club about climate and how students and teachers can help.
“Me and Izabel had lunch last semester, and when we talked she would update me on YPA and I would talk about my ideas. I introduced her to Mr. Poller because I had Adobe last year and I thought he would be the perfect teacher for this club,” sophomore Amina Qureshi said.
This club focuses significantly on being student driven, as Michael Poller is the teacher that facilitates, but the students involved do a majority of the work.
“I help facilitate and I deal with administrative stuff, if they need money for something they want to do or if they are dealing with money,” advisor Mr. Poller said.
Last week they hosted a bake sale selling cosmic brownies and hispanic pastries to reach out and promote their club.
“We were having a bake sale to talk to people and find new members to spread the work and gain interest in joining our new club,” sophomore Izabel Cana-Cajbon said.
They had their first interest meeting on Monday to bring attention to the new club while finding members who share similar goals for helping the environment.
