Athlete Of The Month: Emma Staples
The ball flies through the air, the crowd is silent. Swish. Senior point guard Emma Staples lands another shot from way downtown. The five-six Staples is no walk in the park to defend against. She averages 14.0 points per game so far this season; if she doesn’t have an opportunity to score, her pinpoint passes will do the trick. Throughout Staples’s career, she has accumulated 502 points, 100 assists and 82 rebounds. As a junior Staples hit an all-time high, amassing 259 points, 51 points and 41 rebounds in a single season.
Staples started playing basketball at a very young age, which has single-handedly contributed to her success. Staples has also been on varsity since her freshman year.
“I started playing basketball when I was 10. When I was younger I played soccer, but I wanted to try something else and ended up loving basketball,” Staples said.
To Staples, basketball isn’t just a game. It is her way to happiness
“Basketball is super important to me because it’s given me so much. I’ve made great friends and it’s allowed me to grow on and off the court,” Staples said.
Staples’s biggest moment as a basketball player was when the Titans went on a run to win the conference tournament.
“My most memorable moment was when we went on a big run at the end of my sophomore season and won the conference tournament,” Staples said
Staples does not plan to play at the college level but does plan to play club basketball at whatever college she attends. Staples’s four years on the team will be remembered as she contributed much each year.
