In the wake of Hurricane Helene, West is no stranger to club-hosted donation drives. FCA, Girls’ Service Club and SGA all hosted various drives for victims of the disaster. Now, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is hosting another drive, yet this time for something much closer.
Junior and Student Leader Cooper Henson has organized a donation drive for Brenner’s Children’s Hospital here in Winston-Salem. Motivated by his own personal history with the hospital, he has encouraged the rest of FCA to join in, making it a club-wide event.
“Brenner’s holds a special place in my heart personally. I battled cancer for ten months and beat it, but it would not have been possible without the staff and culture of Brenner’s,” Henson said. “Generosity is instructed in the Bible and meeting the needs of Brenner’s Children’s Hospital is one way we can do this.”
His infectious and giving spirit has inspired the whole FCA to join in on this charity event.
“Cooper’s got a heart for service. He’s been wanting to do some kind of donation drive, some kind of service, since we started FCA this year, so I think they decided on that. Cooper was a big part of that,” junior and fellow Student Leader David Ball said.
The club is looking for people who are willing to donate themed band-aids, coloring books and any other giftable children’s items, especially children’s Bibles. They will be collecting donations from now until Dec 4.
“Especially with the holiday giving season coming up, giving these resources now is a great way to couple generosity and service with meeting personal needs and Christmas time. Many struggling families may not be able to provide gifts for their kids, and being able to spoil these kids in a time so treasured is something really special,” Henson said.
FCA is an open-door club and encourages everyone to come and hang out Wednesday mornings in the APAC. They encourage anyone interested in contributing to the drive to stop by and give what they can to this cherished establishment.
