Students who are enrolled in the teaching as a profession class now have the opportunity to continue on their legacy of becoming a teacher in the future with the addition of adding a second and third level. Students who took the first level course will now have the opportunity to take higher level courses to enhance their learning experience.
“Last year there was only teaching as a profession [As an individual course] , and this year we have levels two and three. Level three is getting to experience teaching in schools, so I love both levels and the students love the field experience part,” CTE teacher Kareem Marshall said.
Marshall is blown away by the hard work the students are doing while teaching at Southwest.
“I’m really impressed by the students. I’ve observed the students [while teaching other students] and seen them, and what I’m most pleased about is that they’ve learned each student’s name- which makes it easy while learning,” Marshall said.
students had previously gone to Southwest Elementary to teach students only on Fridays, the students now have the opportunity to go to the elementary school twice a week.
“I get so excited to see the kids and teach them [the students] something new. They’re second graders, so they have the whole world to explore,” senior Adela Gomez-Duran said.
Students taking this class get a feel of what it’s like to be a teacher, as well as how fun it is to be one. In general, it has encouraged them to truly become a teacher in the future.
“I love the fact that we [the class] are actually teaching, I want to become a higher level calculus teacher when I get older, so it has really encouraged me to be a teacher in the future,” junior Matthew Way said.
With the teaching as a profession being a class, there are hopes that this class will persuade more students to become teachers in the future, especially with the recent decrease in teachers.
With this class only having a small number of students, Marshall, the head teacher of this class, encourages all students who are interested in teaching in the future to sign up for her class.
“I just want more students to come who really want to go into the profession of teaching. This is the best option for them because they’re getting college credits. This is actually a college course that is offered here at West, so they’re getting credits when they go off to college. There are courses in colleges that they won’t have to do because they have done it,” Marshall said.
With these two additional classes for teaching a profession course, it’ll be easy for those who signed up for this class and want to become a teacher in the future.
