Now that Spanish Heritage History Month has come to a close, we would like to showcase Spanish teacher Sibela Pinochet for contributing a major part in celebrating the traditions and culture during this month.
During this time, students and teachers participate in some activities, like going to fiestas downtown, putting together class parties and learning the history of important figures.
Pinochet is a Spanish teacher here at West, she is also the head of the Spanish department. She is originally from Chile, “When I was a senior in high school, I saw a sign that said ‘American Field Service: would you like to be an exchange student?’ I had always wanted to see what was on the other side of the continent. They had found me a family and I started my senior year in New York, ” Pinochet said.
Once she had moved to the U.S., Pinochet started to learn English, then continued her education and earned her undergraduate degree in Buffalo, New York. Her original plan was to be a Psychologist, but later found out that’s not what she is passionate about, so she switched to international business. While studying, she tutored some students in Spanish. “Several people said ‘You’re a natural teacher,’ ‘ You should consider going into teaching’,” said Pinochet.
When Pinochet teaches, she focuses on students’ certain learning styles and having a great time during class. She also has her students listen and dance to Hispanic music in order to help them learn more of the depth of Spanish heritage.
“In my classroom I try to make class fun, I try to include some physical activities like dancing, but also try to make sure everyone in the class knows everyone and are comfortable with each other,” Pinochet said.
With all of Pinochet’s dedication to expose her students to Hispanic culture, she has spread the tradition of her heritage and aims to inspire students to experience things they might not experience in their daily lives.
