Illuminating the stage with a new kind of light, “WCKY” clicks on our flashlights as we look into its enthralling mystery. It will be premiering this October as the first play of the 24-25 school year, and as the first of its genre. Humor meets homicide in the 1939-based production when a radio show’s opening night takes an unexpected turn of events. The captivating peculiarity and alluring nature of the plot offers great audience interaction as viewers attempt to solve the mystery before it’s revealed.
Renae Hubbard, the theater department’s teacher and director, is thrilled to be putting on such a show, and is very enthusiastic to show off her students’ hard work as the opening night approaches.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Hubbard says. “It’s really wacky – that’s what WCKY kind of alludes to – is that it’s wacky. It’s about an old radio station that does silly radio shows, and it’s brand new, and on their opening night, the last night of 1939, everything goes crazy, including a little bit of murder.”
This show definitely sets the mood as ‘spooky season’ and Halloween nears, so members are filled with holiday spirit and are very enthusiastic about performing it.
“When I think of spooky time, I think of Scooby-Doo, murder mysteries and Nancy Drew, because I’ve grown up reading books like that. I think having a murder mystery as the fall play is perfect for this time of year,” junior Avy Brito said.
Composed of atypical and eccentric scenes, WCKY gives its actors the opportunity to expand their theatrical horizons and get out of their comfort zones. Many students share the same keenness for the show’s quirkiness.
“Oh I’m very excited. I get to sing a lot – spoiler alert – and it’s just a really fun show where we get to do a lot of outlandish things that we don’t usually get to do… We needed something to liven-up our creativity,” junior Camille Caldwell said.
Cast members are anticipating the premiere and are anxious to show off all the hard work, passion and dedication they put into the making of the production.
“I’m most excited to perform and to show the whole school how well I, and the whole cast in general, have been doing, and how great this play is going to be,” senior Riley McCallister said.
WCKY will be showing starting October 3-5 at 7 p.m. for only $5 at the door. So grab your magnifying glass, put on your brown leather coat and don’t miss this night of fraud-filled fun.
