Tavia Gilmore, previously an English teacher, has been promoted to Vice Principal starting this year. She taught at West for eight years before leaving to train for administrative positions for a year. Now that she has returned to West, Gilmore is looking forward to not only helping around the school but improving the overall environment for students.
Gilmore had always wanted to shift toward the realm of administration. She wanted to move out of the classroom and focus more on guiding students.
“It kind of feels like a double-edged sword. I miss the controlled environment of my classroom and being able to use creativity to teach students about literature. I also love the administrative side because I can really focus on reaching more students outside the class in terms of mentoring,” Gilmore said.
Her overall love and commitment to the school is what compelled her to return.
“My love for the students, the Titans and honestly the feeling of familiarity and being able to be with familiar faces is what made me come back,” Gilmore said.
She has a few things she is looking to accomplish during her time as Vice Principal.
“One of my goals is to help students understand the importance of their education. While there is a social aspect to school the primary focus should be learning so you can set yourself up for whatever aspirations you may have in school and life,” Gilmore said.
