At the beginning of each school year, many students find enjoyment in joining extracurricular activities. Among the various club choices offered, a brand new group steps onto campus this year. Titan Trekkers, a club founded by two juniors, is dedicated to forming a community of students who take interest in all things hiking.
Despite there being a handful of outdoor and nature-centric clubs already available to students, juniors Anna Hege and Olivia Hutchison were inspired by their passion for hiking to create a club specifically dedicated to the activity.
“Olivia and I got really into hiking over the summer and we wanted to start a club here that includes fitness, getting some time outdoors and making it a place where everyone can come together to get off their devices and get some important vitamin D,” Hege said.
Regardless of one’s previous hiking experience, Titan Trekkers is open to all who seek to spend time in nature and broaden their horizons.
“Titan Trekkers is for anyone who is willing to get outside, and anyone is welcome. Bring your friends, bring your parents, bring your dogs if you want to,” Hutchison said. “We’re trying to reach as many people as possible.”
While the main focus of the club is to spend time outdoors and hiking, there will be a few sit-down meetings held throughout the year to touch base with members and plan for future hikes.
“We will most likely meet once a semester and meetings will consist of talking and planning out our next hiking trip, getting to know each other and coming up with how to give back to the community through things like donating canned goods to food pantries,” Hege said.
Most hikes will take place on the weekends, with one or two per semester. Dates for each hiking trip will be determined in advance.
“We plan to have a meeting a week or so in advance of every hike, and there will be around one hike per semester. There may be some additional hikes throughout the year which we will give details and carpooling information for,” Hutchison said.
A Remind message group is still in the works, but the club founders can be contacted via Instagram, @wftitantrekkers. Club sponsor Sara Cranford is also available in the 700 building for any additional information. For those interested in getting outdoors and spending time in nature, make sure to check out the Titan Trekkers at Club Rush during all lunches on Sept. 19.
