I used to hate warm weather: mosquito bites, sweat, bland outfits and sunburns. I would avoid going to the beach and opt out of the pool whenever I had the chance. Past me would have preferred a thunderstorm over any kind of heat, but I’ve learned to appreciate the sun for all of its amazing benefits.
The cold days when the sun sets at five are behind us. Instead of being cooped up at home under the covers refusing to step into the frigid outdoors, we can go outside comfortably. This time of the year is the perfect time to plan hangouts with your friends and loved ones. For not having many holidays, I believe spring/summer to be the most romantic time of the year. Picnic dates, cookouts, theme parks and brunches are some of the best ways to enjoy the warm weather. Cherry blossoms are growing, flowers are blooming and the sky is full of puffy clouds; it’s definitely the prettiest season. Besides its visual values, the sunny weather provides its own benefits.
It is common knowledge that the sun increases our Vitamin D levels but that’s not all. The sun strengthens bone health, reduces high blood pressure and increases melatonin and serotonin levels, just to name a few. Everyone knows the sun can cause skin damage but that is with excessive amounts of sun exposure. It can actually treat acne, eczema and psoriasis. However, doctors only recommend a small amount of time in the sun, from 10-45 minutes depending on your skin, age and location. Instead of looking at the bad effects of the sun, we should embrace and appreciate what it gives us.
I used to deem warm weather clothes as boring and almost impossible to accessorize, but I have broadened my horizon. There’s plenty of other options besides the typical shorts and T-shirt combo, but I prefer my shirts to be loose or have no sleeves altogether. Air conditioning won’t always have your back in this weather so it’s best to always check the temperature and avoid pesky sweat stains. Cargo and embroidered shorts, lace camis, babydoll tank tops, cover ups and skorts are my go-to spring/summer clothing items. As long as you pair your outfit with a few accessories, it is guaranteed to come out cute and comfortable.
Now to address the best part of this time of year, no more seasonal depression. With all of these factors combined, the sun is truly one of the most effective solutions to get rid of those negative thoughts. No more sulking at home or being tired from a lack of vitamins when you can step outside into the beautiful outdoors. If you feel like you are sleeping your life away, throw on a sundress and have a brunch with those who are closest to you. If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, go on a walk through the park.
Your life is in your hands more than ever and it’s time for you to decide what you want to do with it. Before we know it, pools will open up and it will be officially declared summer. Use this time throughout spring to sunbathe in your car or anywhere with a window and embrace the beauty around you.
