There are only three words that can describe the Titans’ season: success, dominance and achievement. With only three losses on their record, the team is optimistic for a solid run in state playoffs.
“One of our goals at the beginning of the season was to advance further into the playoffs than the first round last year and I think we have a lot of momentum going into playoffs. The team has bonded and become closer as the season progressed, especially since spring break,” head coach Kevin Baity said.
In an unusual turn of events, the team is being guided by an unconventional group. Juniors Sydney Horton, Kaylyn Riddle and Timia Sales have helped power this team through a successful conference season and what they all hope to be an extended run in playoffs.
“It feels very rewarding to be able to have that title and motivate my team. I try and lead them by giving them talks before every game and making sure they know that making mistakes is okay. There’s a lot of talent on the team, and I have no doubt that we could go very far,” Sales said.
Although the devastating defeats to Reagan left the Titans trailing in conference, they had a strong run in the tournament. In the first round, the team left their opponent with a goose egg on the scoreboard in a 15-0 win against Reynolds. Following such a dominant performance, they were hopeful heading into the second round. Although the Davie War Eagles kept it closer than Reynolds was able to, the Titans prevailed with a 6-3 win to secure their spot in conference tournament finals.
They were handed two of their losses at the hands of hometown rival, Reagan High School, losing 5-4 and 4-1. However, three proved to be the lucky number for the team, as they faced Reagan in the tournament finals and were able to escape with a harrowing 1-0 win to secure the tournament championship.
With the three remaining in the team’s loss column, heads remain high as conference play ends and playoffs come to a start. The Titans are seeded No. 13 and will play No. 20 seed, East Forsyth, at home tonight in the first round.
