Movie theaters worldwide are shutting down due to the major increase in streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, Disney and MAX are now some of the biggest streaming services with the most popular movies. This brings the question to many if theaters are even still thriving, and if so, how long is there until movie theaters are gone forever?
Some prefer to feel safe and secure in the privacy of their home because of the danger at the movie theaters. This is
why people choose to watch streaming services over watching it at the theaters. At the movies it could be crowded or even chaotic and many people prefer streaming movies because of the security and privacy it allows.
“I personally prefer streaming services because it provides privacy and makes me feel more safe and secure when watching a movie at home,” sophomore Sophia Messina said.
Streaming services allow people to watch movies wherever and whenever they want. They also give access to a wide catalog of movies, whether it be the newest hit or a memorable classic.
“A lot of the services are accessible anywhere you go, even out of the state. Many services provide VPNs’ to be able to watch it wherever you go,” junior Brandon Nguyen said.
Theaters are in a constant state of struggle and panic to keep guests happy with the movie experience with many theaters now empty or trashed; it’s hard for people to say they prefer the theater now. Because many students feel frustrated about the sudden decrease in movie theater popularity, the alternative option of streaming services is making its way to the top.
“I feel heartbroken that theaters are now being shut down due to streaming services. Ever since I was little, my school used to go on trips to the movies but now it feels like no one even bothers to mention the movies as a hang out idea,” senior Hayden Morris said.
As well as the overwhelming environment, many students say that the prices at the movie theaters make them feel like they are being overcharged. Many students are upset about the prices and feel as though they are being scammed into spending more.
“I have not gone to the movies since Barbie came out, the atmosphere was chaotic and loud. Many workers were trying to upsell me overpriced merchandise, concessions and tickets for what they called ‘a great deal’ seemed like a scam to me,” senior Carlos Martinez said.
Due to all of these factors many theaters now are almost out of business and being shut down with what used to be an ideal hangout place now a ghost town.
