Students who were interested in trying new foods, learning new dances and appreciating cultures were given the opportunity to attend this year’s International Banquet last night.
Just like the previous years, the banquet brought students of all kinds together and celebrated their differences. It was an opportunity to love and respect other cultures.
“My favorite thing about the International Banquet was all the different types of food and having the opportunity to meet new people. I also enjoy listening to the music,” Spanish Club member Paola Carballo said.
This was the second International Banquet since the disruption of COVID-19, which prevented celebrations from taking place. Last year the Spanish Club revived the event. But this year was far different.
“Originally this event started with my Spanish class and Spanish club. It expanded this year with the other language classes,” Spanish teacher Sibela Pinochet said.
Some students brought a dish for free rather than paying the $5 entrance fee.
“I brought in macaroni and cheese and tried so much good food, I literally forgot what I served myself,” freshman Wesley Garrett said.
This banquet included a buffet of different types of foods, a DJ and a fashion show for those who wore traditional clothing. Additionally, members from the Spanish Club taught others how to do certain dances such as bachata, merengue, salsa and cumbia.
“I love dancing to salsa because my dad taught me and it is our traditional dance in our country. [Cuba],” Spanish Club member Lorena Gonzalez-Abreu said.
Having an International Banquet leads students to respect other cultures and learn something new.
“It’s an opportunity for different cultures to be spread around and learn about other cultures. It’s also great for entertainment and shows that the school is not only for learning,” Spanish Club member Juan Romero said.
To all my brothers and sisters, I Sí you: Spanish club and world language classes hosting the International banquet
