After years of safety issues and dangers to students, it is now required that parents cannot stop on Lewisville-Clemmons road to let their children out of the car. Any parents who continue to do so and are caught will be fined. Due to issues with students being dropped off and picked up on the main road, new traffic signs and safety precautions have been implemented on campus.
There has also been an issue with traffic piling up in the afternoon on Lewisville Clemmons and backing up the road.
“Around 2:45 p.m. to 3 o’clock, the line in the front of the school gets all the way backed up to Lewisville-Clemmons where parents can’t turn into the front parking lot. Then they end up stopping on Lewisville Clemmons,” Principal Kevin Spainhour said.
The Village of Clemmons has been coming up with safe solutions for this issue by communicating with Spainhour and involving law enforcement.
“They talked about, probably for nearly a year now, ways to address [the traffic]. They are committed to providing law enforcement and they are going to start putting some signs up like ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Stopping’ signs and try to alleviate that issue in the afternoons,” Spainhour said.
Officers will be patrolling the drop-off and pick-up of students on this road in the morning and afternoons to ensure student safety.
“We ask for law enforcement to be aware of the students that are being let out in the mornings and also picked up in the afternoons where cars just stop in various spots along Lewisville- Clemmons,” Spainhour said.
Signs have been posted outside the entrance of the front parking lot.
“The signs will be placed, from what I’ve been told, when you get past River Oaks and you approach that neighborhood and start to turn into that parking lot. There will also be some signs along the front of the school,” Spainhour said.
Spainhour is sure that this will benefit afternoon traffic if people choose to go down Southwest School Rd. instead of lining up on Lewisville-Clemmons.
“I don’t know that in the morning it’s going to make a huge difference. We are at least hoping to eliminate parents just stopping and letting their kid just hop out of the car. The bigger target is the afternoon and trying to get parents to go down to Holder Road and Southwest Road and trying to get them to line up there,” Spainhour said.
Students have had issues with other students being dropped off on the main road.
“Even at 8:20 when there’s no line, parents let their kids off on the main road because they don’t feel like driving into the school park lot. It’s annoying,” sophomore Jacob Pravia said.
When returning from spring break, students were reminded of the new policies with the increased presence of law enforcement at the front of campus.
