A political voice speaks for the country, and represents what the people collectively want. Whether it’s enforcing our laws or changing our Constitution, who we put in the driver’s seat right now matters more than ever. So why is it when I observe the people who make up our government, I see a bunch of geriatrics? This scourge of senior citizens has been attacking our country for too long, and it’s time to put people in charge who are going to be alive to see the decisions they voted and advocated for.
If you can be too young to run for president, the current minimum age being 35, I can make the firm argument that you can be too old to run for president too. The major candidates for our upcoming election, Joe Biden, 80 and Donald Trump, 77, are the oldest candidates running for office in history, only ever being beaten by themselves four years ago. Joe Biden’s age has been something remarked upon throughout his entire presidency, being made fun of in videos made by Trump, referring to the White House as “White House Senior Living,” but Trump himself is only three years younger than him. Unfortunately, the White House isn’t the only place this problem arises. At this point, it’s getting hard to tell whether you’re watching footage of a Congress vote, or a nursing home. Currently, the average age of someone working our Senate is around 64 years old.
Money is no longer a problem by the time you’re 80 on a congressman or president’s salary. It’s time to retire. Putting an age limit on political positions would be a major service to the American people, and it completely baffles me that these people are still continuing to lead us. As you age, the risk of conditions that hinder your ability to make competent decisions rises exponentially, yet there is nothing in place to keep these people out of our offices, and into retirement. It’s time for a change, but voter apathy is worse than ever. The reason that these senior citizens are still in office is because we haven’t taken a stand and voted against them and in favor of limiting their lifelong terms. It’s time to kick the old folks out and enforce political competency.
It’s time to shut down the political nursing home
