Depending on the type of person you are, you might spend anywhere from five months to five minutes planning and executing the perfect Halloween costume. Many people base their outfits on a popular movie or viral pop culture moment from the past year, and here are my predictions for the costumes you’ll see the most this Halloween.
1. Barbie (and Ken!): “Barbie” is the biggest movie of 2023 worldwide, so it’ll be no surprise when you see many others donning Barbie’s iconic pink this October. The movie itself provides a plethora of outfits that can be replicated this season, like “Cowgirl Barbie” and “Sporty Barbie.” Plus, the easy addition of Ken could also make this costume popular amongst couples.
2. “Oppenheimer”: Closely following “Barbie” as the third biggest movie release of the year, “Oppenheimer” is sure to have many people dusting off their dad’s oldest suit or taking a trip to Goodwill. The movie’s costuming is seemingly lackluster, considering there’s only so much you can do in a film that centers around men building bombs in 1940. But, the craze surrounding the same-day release of “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie”(also known as “Barbenheimer”) makes it a simple, yet recognizable costume.
3. Wednesday Addams: Members of the Addams Family have remained staples in the Halloween costume world since the ‘60s, but Wednesday’s popularity in particular has only been amplified by the release of the Netflix original, “Wednesday.” The ease of throwing your hair in double braids and finding a black dress also makes this costume enticing for those who will wait until Oct. 30 to pick their outfit.
4. Taylor Swift: Swift has remained in the headlines throughout the year, from her record-breaking Eras tour to her recent romance with star NFL player, Travis Kelce. Due to the magnitude of her fan base and the seemingly endless number of outfits to recreate, you will surely see many costumes inspired by her many eras this Halloween. Swift and Kelce would also be a great couple’s costume for any Swiftie and their football-loving boyfriend.
5. Spider-Man: “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” made its debut this past summer, and it’s safe to say that Spider-Man’s scope has now reached past the superhero-loving elementary school boys. Many adults and teenagers are joining in on the fun this October, and you’re sure to see numerous recreations of the many versions of Spider-Man.
Whatever outfit you conjure up this Halloween, have fun and be safe.
