Following the group’s disbandment in 2001, the West Forsyth Thespian Honors Society has made its way back to the stage. Thespian Society is the Theatre Honors Society for high schoolers. This club allows students who take theatre at an honors level to participate in a club with others who enjoy the theatrical arts as much as they do.
The Thespian Society dispersed years ago due to lack of money and students, but there is finally an opportunity to bring it back.
“It takes money to have an honors society and we are at a point where we can finally meet it. When it comes to students, we have enough people who are taking theatre at an honors level who are willing to participate,” Theatre director Renae Hubbard said.
Students who are trying to join the Thespian Society and take theatre at an honors level can get in based on the in-class point system.
“Students get points for everything they do throughout the years and when those points accumulate they can join the honors society as well as be an honors student. Students typically reach the amount of points required by their junior year,” Hubbard said.
When it comes to opportunities and activities within the society students will have the opportunity to take master classes and audition for scholarships and competitions.
“There are professionals in different fields of theatre who will be coming to teach students about things like acting, technical and costumes in an actual work setting,” Hubbard said.
This year is the first year so Hubbard is planning on letting students observe and get an idea of what the club will look like.
“We would meet with other chapters at other schools and go to competitions and watch so students can get a feel of what is going on a couple times a semester,” Hubbard said.
Students feel this could be a good opportunity to meet new people and try something new.
“I feel like this could be fun, you would be able to get inspiration from a lot of different people and develop new skills,” freshman Lila Najmulski said.
Students also feel the scholarships could be beneficial if they wanted to continue theatre into college.
Getting scholarships is a big thing, as a senior you have to worry about the expenses of college so getting a scholarship would mean a lot,” senior Kassidy Stevenson said.
If you are interested in joining Thespian Society but are unsure, it is a great opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and determine if theatre is something you would like to pursue in the future.
