October is the time of the year when everybody brings out the bins of Halloween decorations to make their home as spooky as possible. For some, however, it’s crunch time. This month becomes a priority for seniors as the early action deadline for many colleges and universities approaches. To avoid the stress of applying to college, several local and school-related events are coming to help you put together a top-notch college application and get you into the fall mood.
Countdown to College
From Oct. 16 to Oct. 20, the College Foundation of North Carolina hosts a college application week, which allows students to apply to many North Carolina colleges and universities for free. A list of selected schools is available at CFNC.org. During this week, the media center will hold sessions for help with filling out college applications Oct. 16 and 17.
Career Fair
WS/FCS has collaborated with the Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. Chamber of Commerce to allow students to explore various careers by establishing the World of Work (WOW) career fair. Seniors are invited to attend Tuesday, Oct. 17, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. and are encouraged to dress nicely as this is also a hiring event for graduating students. Sophomores are scheduled to attend Wednesday, Oct. 18, and time slots depend on the school. Transportation will be provided for all tenth graders participating in the fair. Buses will leave at 9:15 a.m. and return by 12 p.m. The fair will be at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Unity Day
On October 17 and 18, the SAVEDD club will host Unity Day, which promotes positivity and anti-bullying. Before school, club members will pass out “unity grams” in the cafeteria. These are little notes that students can fill out to spread kindness to friends and teachers. On Oct. 18, students are encouraged to wear green or orange to contribute to the cause.
Buddy Walk
The Buddy Walk is an annual event to promote the inclusion of those with Down Syndrome. This program was established in 1995 and is still going strong today. The walk will be Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you want to volunteer, see Stuart Egan in room 1028 for more information.
Titan Trunk or Treat
Trick or treat yourself this Halloween by attending the Titan Trunk or Treat. SGA is hosting this event, which will take place Oct. 27 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is open to the community. Each club is encouraged to donate a trunk to decorate; clubs participating in the event may decorate their trunk from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. SGA is also searching for volunteers and candy donations to make this night successful. A canned food drive for Clemmons Food Pantry is also included in the Trunk or Treat to further give back to the Village.
Senior Day
Seniors will dress in their best to take the class photo. Students are also expected to order caps and gowns and pay the senior fee required to walk at graduation. This event lasts from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and seniors are excused from all classes. Considering the unpredictability of the weather, students are encouraged to wear something warm. Boys must wear a long-sleeve dress shirt, a necktie a bowtie, dark dress pants, and shoes. Girls can wear dresses, pantsuits, or dress pants with a nice blouse but must follow dress code regulations. Spaghetti straps or strapless dresses without a cardigan are prohibited, and shoes must have a back strap or enclosed heel. Seniors, make sure to dress to impress on Nov. 9.
For those getting ready for college or just exploring the possibilities, several opportunities are available to explore interests and jobs. Make sure to complete your applications on time to attend these events.
