A new school year means a turnover in leadership for most clubs and activities, and the Student Government Association was no different. After a long and hard-fought campaign, senior Hobart Jones won the student body presidency for the 2023-24 school year back in May.
“My first reaction [to finding out I was elected] was like “that’s dope.” I was pretty excited. I was just kind of proud. I fulfilled what I wanted [to do],” Jones said.
Jones’s people-skills and his commitment to listening to the students is what tipped the scale in his favor as the winning candidate.
“I talked with a lot of people throughout the school, so I could hear a lot of opposing viewpoints from people who may not be friends with each other. But I was able to kind of be friends with those different people, so I can take all that input and put it together into one person,” Jones said.
After the initial excitement passed, the work began. Being student body president, and therefore the leader of the SGA, is a huge role that comes with a lot of focus and responsibility.
“We’ve expanded SGA,” Jones said. “We’ve almost doubled our membership from last year. We’re also trying to plan some new things every week.”
Jones and his fellow SGA leaders have already been hard at work coordinating events, with the interests of the student body at the heart of their work.
“This year we [did] the Best Dressed competition, trying to get the involvement in Spirit week up. We set up Senior Sunrise this year. We’re just trying to do more events and trying to get the students in[volved] more,” Jones said.
Jones’s term will eventually come to an end however, with new students rising to fill his and the other SGA officers’ current roles. Jones advises them and any new members of SGA in general to jump right in with enthusiasm.
“You gotta do it,” Jones said. “It’s one of the best clubs at this school, because it allows you to make an impact, meet with other people and just overall get a great feel of the West Forsyth community.”
If you have any suggestions for this school year or are just curious about what events are in the works, Hobart Jones and SGA are the ones to call.
