After head coach Jeffery Williams left to coach the girl’s soccer team, big cleats were left to fill. So John Blake stepped up to coach the boys’ varsity soccer team and is already enjoying his role as head coach
“West is a great place to be, there is a lot of talent here, but at the same time, it is a really good community. Coach Williams has set it up as a really good place to coach. I am excited to be here,” Blake said.
Previously, Blake coached at Ledford High School in Thomasville for 12 years and has been coaching for 14 years. Blake feels that culture is a big part of the game and wants the players to play at a higher standard and reflect their maturity on and off the field.
The team is currently first in the state and second in the country. Blake has confidence that the team has a high ceiling and a very good chance in the playoffs. Blake is a player’s coach and he wants the players to be comfortable. He also wants them to feel confident and own the process.
“We just need to go out and win one game at a time. Along with practicing, it is very important to know that your opponent is important. Motivation is key. It is all about being mentally prepared and locked in,” Blake said.
It’s been a successful year thus far with Blake as coach and we can look forward to a great year with many more goals and plenty of wins.
